East Burwood Football Club has always had a successful junior football program. Many of the boys who go through the junior football program continue their football at a senior level at East Burwood, and there is a long list of players who have gone on to play AFL. To be a strong community club we need to embrace these young men and give them an environment where they can develop to their full potential.
Over the past 12 months a sub-committee from both the Junior and Senior Club have worked behind the scenes to create the East Burwood Football Academy. The Academy Supported by St. Kilda Coach Alan Richardson, who himself came through the junior program will help develop our players both on and off the field including; skill development, pathway programs, community and social responsibility, job opportunities and most importantly personal development.
It is a great pleasure to announce the establishment of the East Burwood Football Academy and the appointment of Ian Penhalluriak as the Foundation Head of the Academy.
We provide an environment where young people can develop to their full potential, not only as footballers but as well rounded people, able to contribute to society and fulfil their dreams.
Ian was appointed to this position after an extensive interview process and comes highly recommended. He returns to our club with an enormous range of football experiences at the highest level and knows the pathways our players need to be follow to be the best they can be. Some of Ian’s experiences include:
- past EFL player and Captain Coach at Croydon Football Club
- assistant/development coach at AFL clubs Richmond and the Sydney Swans
- 25 years and current involvement at TAC club Sandringham Dragons
- involvement in the School Sport Victoria school boys footy team since 1988
Most importantly Ian is an East Burwood person. His sons are past players of both the Junior and Senior Club. Ian has previously worked with Sean Kavanagh (our current Director of Coaching) and is keen to continue this association to ensure our junior players are developed both on and off the field. Whilst the Academy specifically targets players in the Under 15 – 20 age groups, there will be development programs established throughout the junior club. Ian’s first job is to meet with coaching staff in the off-season and seek their input into opportunities and programs for our players.
As football is not the only focus of the Academy we are proud to announce a partnership through sponsorship with CMR Personnel. Headed by Joel Smith (Ex St Kilda and Hawthorn player) we will be working closely with his company to help provide any employment opportunities sought by our Academy participants.
As an example of an East Burwood person who has developed through juniors, played in seniors and remained a loyal servant of the club, we could not think of a better example than Stuart Cook. This is why we will be naming the Academy after Stuart. It will now be known as the East Burwood, Stuart Cook Youth Academy.
