Tribute to Bruce – A Pillar of East Burwood Football Netball Club
We mourn the passing of Bruce, a cherished member and lifelong supporter of the East Burwood Football & Netball Club, who left us after a brief battle with illness.
Bruce, alongside his devoted wife Denise, was a passionate supporter of EBFNC for over four decades. His journey with the club began in 1981 when he joined as a player. He played until 1985, when injury sadly brought his playing career to an early close. During that time, Bruce made a lasting impact—winning the Best & Fairest award and serving as captain-coach in 1983.
Retirement didn’t slow him down. When the Under-18 coach stepped away mid-season, Bruce was persuaded to step in. It quickly became clear that coaching young men was a true passion of his. Under his leadership, the team won a premiership in 1987 and were runners-up in 1988—though Bruce would jokingly say that result came under “dubious circumstances.” Many of those young players went on to play senior football, a testament to Bruce’s mentorship and influence.
Bruce’s dedication extended beyond the field. He stepped up as Club President during a challenging period of negotiations with council over new clubroom developments. Though he eventually had to step away from the role to focus on his growing business, his commitment to the club never wavered.
Until his final days, Bruce remained a loyal supporter and generous sponsor of EBFNC. His presence, leadership, and unwavering support have left an indelible mark on our community. It was a pleasure to award Bruce with his life membership earlier this year, the look of pure joy on his face when it was announced said it all.
Our thoughts are with Denise and the entire family during this difficult time. Bruce’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
May he rest in peace.
